Perform Cover Songs to Build Awareness of Your Talent – Look at Tori Kelly Then and Now

Tori Kelly and Jeremy Passion

Tori Kelly is one of the artists to watch in 2015. A talented singer-songwriter and former American Idol contestant, Tori brought attention to her talented voice and performance skills by covering songs on YouTube. In fact, according to her biography on her official site, Tori Kelly Music,  “Tori Kelly first rose to attention when her cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You,” went viral, racking up over 22 million views. To date, her YouTube channel boasts over ONE MILLION YouTube Subscribers with over 89 million views.”

This was Tori Kelly just three years ago with another talented singer-songwriter, Jeremy Passion, as they sang “One Man Woman” by Playa (featuring Aaliyah). As you can see from the video below, they absolutely killed it.

This is Tori Kelly now with her debut single, Nobody Love, co-written with superstar songwriters Max Martin, Rickard Gorannson and Savan Kotecha.

Tori’s worked hard to be where she is today, with a record deal with Capitol Records, a 9 city U.S. Tour and opening for acts such as Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran.

If YouTube is not your thing, you can always add cover songs to your set list whenever you play out whether it’s an open mic, local cafe or club show. Cover songs help your audience identify and associate you with better-known artists that represent your chosen genre of music.

But if you don’t think you have or want to be limited by positioning yourself in a particular genre of music, you may need to take a closer look at your personal brand.

After all, how will your fans find you on services like Spotify, Last.fm or YouTube if they don’t know what you sound like?

Use cover songs as a springboard to build awareness for your talent and write songs that show how you are unique compared to other artists in your music genre.
